Russia Considers Joining Asian Football Confederation After Uefa Ban

Russia is contemplating joining the Asian Football Confederation post its ban from Uefa and FIFA competitions due to the Ukraine conflict. This move would radically change the national team’s competitive landscape, requiring them to qualify for tournaments through Asia. Notably, former Spartak president Andrey Chervichenko supports the switch, citing better chances for success in Asia.

Reports suggest Russia is considering a shift from European football to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) following its exclusion from Uefa competitions. This ban was implemented after Russia’s involvement in the Ukraine conflict, leading to the termination of participation in both the Champions League and Europa League. Consequently, Russian clubs may seek affiliation with the AFC, impacting their eligibility for international competitions.

If Russia joins the AFC, its national team would then compete in the Asian Cup instead of the European Championship and would have to qualify for the World Cup through the Asian qualifying tournaments. This transition requires approval from the Asian Confederation for any official switch.

Andrey Chervichenko, the former president of Spartak Moscow, expressed optimism about the move, stating, “It’s a cool idea. I think there will be more money there soon. And we have much more chances to win there. Since we cannot win anything in Europe, we will try in Asia.” He believes several Russian clubs could become competitive in the AFC framework.
