Poll Shows Mixed Sentiments on Trump’s Presidency and Economic Policies

An Overview of Public Sentiment on Trump’s Presidency

This week’s Economist/YouGov Poll sheds light on perceptions surrounding Donald Trump’s job approval, the economy, tariffs, taxes, and the new Republican budget proposal — topics that are hot on everyone’s lips. Currently, only 42% of U.S. adult citizens give a thumbs up to Trump’s efforts as president, while 52% say no thanks. This -10 net approval is a slight dip from last week’s -8. Among Republicans, the approval remains high at 85%, but it’s notable that this is down from a whopping 90%. The question lurking behind this decrease is, is his support eroding, or are we just seeing typical fluctuations in polls? Only time will tell, really.

Public Perception on Economic Management and Trade

As for the prevailing views on the U.S. economy, the outlook seems a tad gloomy. Fifty-two percent of Americans express that things are getting worse, a marginal improvement from 53% last week. What’s particularly striking is how this number was just 37% at the start of Trump’s second term, indicating a substantial turn for the worse. While opinions on how Trump manages jobs and the economy have seen slight improvements recently, they still fall far short of the applause he enjoyed during his earlier term. Many Americans, around 54%, are disapproving of his handling of foreign trade, notably believing that tariffs do more harm than good — a sentiment explained by 48% who think tariffs are harmful.

Insights on the Republican Budget and Tax Concerns

When it comes to the Republican budget plan, opposition seems to outweigh support, as 42% are against it compared to 35% in favour. This marks a slight shift from earlier in Trump’s first term. There’s common ground here; two-thirds of Americans think the wealthy aren’t paying enough taxes, and many suspect they’ll pay even less under the proposed changes. The sentiment is that, crucially, most believe the middle class and poor already shoulder too much of the tax burden. In fact, 43% fear that taxes will increase for them under Trump’s budget. Additionally, 71% of Americans express unease about the mounting federal budget deficit, with 74% preferring cuts in government spending to curtail it. This reveals a shared concern across the political spectrum, which is kind of rare.
