The BMW Group and Tata Technologies have signed an agreement to establish a joint venture (JV) for the development of automotive software and business IT solutions. This collaboration will set up a software and IT hub in Pune, Bangalore, and Chennai, India, with primary operations centered in Bangalore and Pune, while Chennai will focus on business IT solutions. The JV’s execution is pending review and approval by relevant authorities.
Emphasizing the principle of “Engineer in India for the World”, this initiative will harness Tata Technologies’ digital engineering talent to bolster BMW Group’s software coding capabilities. The joint venture will concentrate on developing strategic software solutions, particularly for software-defined vehicles (SDVs), including areas like automated driving, infotainment, and digital services. Business IT development will focus on digitalization and automation across various company functions.
Initially, 100 trained professionals from Tata Technologies will support software projects, with expectations for rapid growth to a four-digit employee count in subsequent years. Christoph Grote from BMW Group highlighted that this partnership will accelerate advancements in vehicle software, leveraging India’s strong talent pool in software engineering to foster premium automotive experiences.
Alexander Buresch of BMW Group IT noted the effectiveness of expanding international DevOps hubs, expressing satisfaction with Tata Technologies as a vital technology partner. Warren Harris, CEO of Tata Technologies, emphasized the commitment to exceptional automotive software and digital engineering, aligning with the vision of engineering a better world. Additionally, Nachiket Paranjpe of Tata Technologies acknowledged the pivotal shift towards software-defined vehicles as a critical evolution in automotive software and development methodologies.
The collaboration reflects a mutual dedication to innovation in automotive engineering and digital solutions. Furthermore, the BMW Group has established a global network of software hubs to enhance real-time software development, which currently achieves up to 140,000 software builds daily. This growth has been bolstered by collaborations across multiple countries, including a recently announced JV for an IT hub in Romania to serve European business IT development needs.
