The BMW Group and Tata Technologies have entered a joint venture aimed at establishing a software and IT development hub in India. Locations will be in Pune, Bangalore, and Chennai, with Bangalore and Pune focusing on development operations and Chennai concentrating on business IT solutions. The formation of this joint venture is pending approval from relevant authorities.
Rooted in the notion of ‘Engineer in India for the World’, this collaboration will capitalize on Tata Technologies’ digital engineering expertise to enhance BMW Group’s software coding capabilities across global IT hubs. The initiative is part of BMW’s strategic focus on software development for software-defined vehicles (SDV), automated driving, infotainment, and digital services in automotive software, as well as business IT solutions emphasizing digitalization and automation.
To ensure effective project initiation, the joint venture will begin with 100 qualified professionals from Tata Technologies, with plans for rapid expansion to a workforce in the four-digit range. Christoph Grote from BMW Group acknowledged that India possesses a significant talent pool with advanced software skills that will drive progress in software-defined vehicles.
Alexander Buresch highlighted the success of international DevOps hubs for BMW Group and expressed enthusiasm about partnering with Tata Technologies to expand their presence in India. Warren Harris from Tata Technologies reaffirmed their commitment to delivering high-quality automotive software solutions and digital engineering. Nachiket Paranjpe added that their collaboration aims to navigate the shift towards software-defined vehicles, creating advanced vehicles that elevate consumer experiences.
This partnership signifies a mutual commitment to innovation within automotive engineering and digital solutions. With a robust global distribution of software hubs, BMW Group is poised for real-time software development in the cloud, producing up to 140,000 software builds daily. BMW has a rich history of automotive software development which has led to an expansive network of development teams worldwide.
Recent expansions include a new IT and software hub in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, focusing on business IT development for operations in Europe. This initiative reflects BMW’s ongoing commitment to developing IT capabilities across various domains, from HR to production and services. The execution of this hub will also require approval from relevant authorities before becoming operational.
