Russian Football Union Decides to Remain in UEFA Despite Ban

The Russian Football Union has chosen to remain with UEFA following the ongoing ban, aiming for a return to international play, including World Cup qualifiers. The organization proposed consultations with UEFA while considering future AFC membership. The UEFA ban prevents Russia from participating in Euro 2024 and the 2022 World Cup, with financial implications for clubs. CSKA Moscow’s president stresses the need to weigh the differences in leagues.
The Russian Football Union (RFU) has decided to continue its membership with UEFA instead of switching to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), expressing a strong desire for Russian teams to return to international competition. This decision follows the ban imposed by UEFA due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. RFU President Alexander Dyukov emphasized the goal of participating in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers soon.
Dyukov mentioned the proposal to create a group for negotiations with UEFA to restore ties. Despite the current abstention from UEFA competitions, he indicated that joining the AFC remains a possibility for the future. The ongoing ban excludes Russia from Euro 2024 qualifiers and FIFA competitions, including the 2022 World Cup.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport has rejected Russia’s appeals against both FIFA and UEFA bans, solidifying their exclusion from international tournaments. CSKA Moscow President Yevgeny Giner highlighted the substantial financial implications for Russian clubs, noting the difference in revenue streams and competition standards between European and Asian football leagues. He suggested that waiting for a return to major European football may be more beneficial.
