Italy’s Trenitalia has emerged as the top rail operator in Europe, according to a study from the NGO Transport & Environment (T&E) released on a recent Monday. The evaluation analyzed 27 rail operators using eight criteria, including ticket prices, reliability, and booking procedures. Notably, Trenitalia was praised for offering one of the best quality-price ratios and excelled in most categories, barring provisions for bicycle travelers.

Swiss operator SBB ranked second, with Czech rail company RegioJet, Austria’s ÖBB, and France’s SCNF following suit in the top five positions. In contrast, Eurostar was ranked the lowest due to its high costs and reliability issues, impacting its service across Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK.

This report coincides with a scheduled 24-hour train strike, affecting Trenitalia services across Italy on December 12-13, further adding to the public’s interest in rail reliability and service quality.

Overall, Trenitalia’s strong performance sets a benchmark for European rail operators, indicating the importance of pricing and reliability in passenger satisfaction.
