FFF Suspends Director Over Allegations of Racial Quota in Youth Football

Francois Blaquart, the FFF’s national technical director, was suspended over allegations of a secret racial quota limiting black and Arab trainees to 30%. An investigation is in progress, with Blaquart and Coach Blanc claiming their remarks were taken out of context. Both deny any form of discrimination amidst the rising scrutiny within French football.

The French Football Federation (FFF) has suspended Francois Blaquart, its national technical director, following allegations of a hidden racial quota for trainees. Reports claim that senior FFF members covertly endorsed a policy to restrict the intake of black and Arab players to 30% for those aged 12-13. Both Blaquart and national team coach Laurent Blanc argued their comments were misinterpreted.

An investigation into these allegations, originating from the French website Mediapart, is anticipated to conclude within eight days. Sports Minister Chantal Jouanno stated that the suspension is in place while the FFF and the General Inspection of Youth and Sports (IGJS) conduct their inquiries.

On Thursday, Mediapart highlighted a meeting where Blaquart allegedly suggested implementing racial quotas to manage the number of players from black or Arab backgrounds in youth academies. The report, including comments from several coaches, indicated a desire to limit players with dual nationality who might choose to represent their countries of origin.

Blaquart was quoted saying, “I cannot not acknowledge these remarks. They have to be put in their context.” He emphasized the need to manage players with dual nationality, without admitting any wrongful intent. Braun also stated he apologizes if his words caused any offense while firmly rejecting accusations of racism or xenophobia.

Moreover, FFF president Fernand Duchaussoy denied the existence of any formal instructions to restrict the number of black or Arab players in the organization. The ongoing scrutiny following these revelations underscores the importance of fair and inclusive practices within the sport.

The suspension of Francois Blaquart by the FFF amidst claims of a racial quota highlights serious allegations of discrimination in French football. While investigations are underway, both Blaquart and Coach Laurent Blanc claim their comments were misconstrued. Their denials, alongside support from FFF leadership, indicate a contentious atmosphere surrounding racial equity in youth football programs.
